Position Overview
Under general supervision, administers the day-to-day operations of the Charles Walker Senior Center program for the City of Gulfport. The coordinator teaches and conducts various recreational activities and must be familiar in one or more recreational activities such as arts, crafts, dances and music. Work involves the responsibility for providing detailed instructions and supervision over a specialized recreational activity and is performed under the general supervision of the Senior Services Program Coordinator.
Essential Job Functions
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, May include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
Teaches and assists the public in ceramics shop; uses and cares for kilns, molds, and other equipment.
Plans and programs activities for senior citizens including ceramics, pottery, quilting and sewing instruction, and in various areas of art and cultural arts instruction.
Assists in designing programs that address the social, physical and emotional needs of the senior population; the programs include various in-house activities / services geared toward enhancing their quality of life.
Ensure confidentiality of records, case studies and screening forms.
Assist Senior Services Program Director in preparations of yearly budget estimates.
Compiles and submits monthly reports to immediate supervisor for review.
Observes facilities and activities to ensure that proper safety, sanitary and maintenance standards are adhered to.
Responsible for the up keep of the facility to include sweeping/mopping floors, trash removal/disposal cleaning rest rooms etc.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Ability to develop, organize, and direct specialized recreational activities.
Ability to supervise the work of subordinates.
Thorough knowledge of city and departmental rules and regulations.
The willingness and capacity to understand and act on the problems and concerns of the elderly.
Patience, tact, initiative, resourcefulness and physical condition commensurate with the duties of the position.
Knowledge of standard office equipment and procedures.
Ability to maintain proper decorum.
Ability to lead and instruct seniors in a variety of recreation activities and special events
Education and Experience
High School graduate or equivalent is required. College education with degree in recreation or related field preferred. Prior experience in working with the public and in the recreational field is required.
Required Licenses or Certificates
Must possess a valid driver's license, first aid and CPR basic certifications.

Physical requirements include occasional lifting/carrying of 50+ pounds; visual acuity, speech and hearing; hand and eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to operate a computer keyboard and basic office equipment. Subject to sitting, standing, reaching, walking, twisting and kneeling to perform the essential functions. Working conditions are both indoors and outdoors.
