About Generate:Biomedicines

Generate:Biomedicines is a new kind of therapeutics company – existing at the intersection of machine learning, biological engineering, and medicine – pioneering Generative Biology to create breakthrough medicines where novel therapeutics are computationally generated, instead of being discovered. The Company has built a machine learning-powered biomedicines platform with the potential to generate new drugs across a wide range of biologic modalities. This platform represents a potentially fundamental shift in what is possible in the field of biotherapeutic development.

We pursue this audacious vision because we believe in the unique and revolutionary power of generative biology to radically transform the lives of billions, with an outsized opportunity for patients in need. We are seeking collaborative, relentless problem solvers that share our passion for impact to join us!

Generate:Biomedicines was founded in 2018 by Flagship Pioneering and has received nearly $700 millionin funding, providing the resources to rapidly scale the organization. The Company has offices in Somerville and Andover, Massachusetts with 300+ employees.

The Role:

Generate:Biomedicines is seeking a visionary and dynamic Director to lead our Protein Analytics and Biophysics function within the Therapeutic Assay Sciences Department, a critical pillar of our AI-driven drug discovery engine. This role offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of biotherapeutic innovation by guiding a multidisciplinary team at the forefront of analytical and biophysical characterization of therapeutic proteins and their molecular targets. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in protein analytics and protein-protein interactions, coupled with exceptional leadership and a passion for advancing the frontiers of biologics development. As a strategic leader, you will chart the direction of the Biophysics group, mentor top-tier scientific talent, and collaborate cross-functionally across Therapeutic Assay Sciences, Protein Sciences, CMC/Tech-Ops, and Technology. Your team's output will power data-rich, high-resolution insights that feed directly into our machine learning feedback loops—accelerating design cycles and driving transformative impact across our therapeutic pipeline.

Here's how you will contribute:

  • Lead and inspire a high-performing team pioneering advanced analytical and biophysical workflows, including HPLC/UPLC (SEC, RP, HIC, IEX), light scattering (SEC-MALS, DLS), thermal stability (DSF, DSC), CE-SDS, cIEF, LC/MS, SPR, BLI, and KinExA—delivering the molecular insights essential to next-generation biologics.
  • Set the strategic vision for the Biophysics function, guiding the development of novel platforms and capabilities that align withGenerate's evolving therapeutic and technological priorities.
  • Collaborate deeply withGenerate's Technology Organization to build seamless data pipelines and closed-loop automation systems that power real-time learning and optimization within ML-driven discovery cycles.
  • Drive operational excellence by ensuring departmental goals are delivered with precision, managing capacity and prioritization while tracking progress against key performance indicators.
  • Continuously evaluate and integrate emerging technologies to enhance the speed, depth, and fidelity of the Design-Build-Test loop—pushing the boundaries of biophysics-enabled drug design.
  • Provide scientific and strategic leadership across the therapeutic pipeline, from early-stage molecular design through Candidate Selection and IND-enabling studies.
  • Manage and optimize partnerships with CROs and external collaborators to scale capabilities and accelerate program timelines.
  • Communicate impactfully with executive leadership and cross-functional stakeholders to align scientific strategy with company-wide objectives and innovation goals.

The Ideal Candidate will have:

  • Ph.D. in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g., Biochemistry, Biophysics, Molecular Biology) or equivalent extensive post-bachelor's industry experience.
  • 8+ years of progressive experience in the biopharma industry, with deep expertise in protein analytics, biophysics, and data-informed decision making.
  • 5+ years of leadership experience, including direct management of cross-functional teams, other people managers, and senior-level scientists.
  • Proven scientific creativity and rigor in solving complex protein characterization challenges across discovery and early development phases.
  • Hands-on familiarity with lab automation platforms and high-throughput analytics to enhance scalability and efficiency of biophysical workflows.
  • Exceptional communication and documentation skills, including experience drafting and reviewing regulatory submissions.
  • Passion for integrating experimental data with machine learning models to accelerate therapeutic design and optimization.
  • Track record of leading in complex, matrixed environments, with the ability to influence across scientific, technical, and organizational boundaries.
  • Demonstrated success in advancing biologics from discovery through IND/Phase 1, with an understanding of both scientific and regulatory expectations.
  • Inspirational team leader and mentor, committed to fostering excellence, inclusion, and professional growth across diverse teams.
  • Strategic thinker with operational agility, capable of aligning scientific strategy with broader organizational objectives.
