Position Summary

The Lead Service Technician is the field lead for commercial service operations. This role performs advanced diagnostics and repairs, sets workmanship standards, mentors technicians/apprentices, and coordinates daily workflow with dispatch and project/service managers. The Lead ensures safety, quality, code compliance, and a positive customer experience while helping drive first‑time fix rates, reduced call‑backs, and profitable service work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advanced Diagnostics&Repair

    • Troubleshoot complex issues on plumbing/HVAC systems (water heaters/boilers, pumps, PRVs, backflows, hydronics; RTUs, split systems, controls) and perform code‑compliant repairs.

    • Execute start‑ups, commissioning, and system performance tuning; verify setpoints and document results.

  • Job Planning&Workflow

    • Review work orders, scope, and site conditions; stage materials/parts; coordinate permits, shutdowns, LOTO, and access.

    • Interface with dispatch to sequence calls, balance workloads, and minimize travel/return trips.

  • Quality, Safety&Compliance

    • Lead Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and toolbox talks; enforce OSHA/company safety rules (confined space, hot work, fall protection, electrical, ladder/scaffold).

    • Ensure installations/repairs meet IPC/UPC/IFGC/IMC and manufacturer specifications; complete QA/QC checklists, pressure/hydrostatic tests, and photos.

  • Customer Communication

    • Communicate diagnostics, options, and estimates; gain approval for work; set realistic ETAs; capture follow‑up recommendations.

    • Represent the company professionally onsite and in documentation.

  • Documentation&Closeout

    • Use the field app/CMMS to record labor, materials, serials, readings, and photos; submit redlines/as‑builts as needed.

    • Ensure accurate parts usage and return/warranty processing; support 2‑/3‑way match with packing slips.

  • Leadership&Mentoring

    • Coach technicians/apprentices on diagnostics, code, and craftsmanship; provide ride‑alongs and skills check‑offs.

    • Give input on scheduling, parts standards, truck stock, and training needs; support onboarding of new hires.

  • Inventory&Tools

    • Maintain truck/tool readiness; request replenishment proactively; care for specialty tools (press tools, analyzers, cameras, jetters, pumps, recovery machines, gauges).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience:3+ years in commercial service (plumbing and/or HVAC) with advanced diagnostics; prior lead/mentor experience preferred.

  • Licensure/Certs:Valid driver's license and acceptable MVR. State/cityJourneyman or Master Plumberlicenseand/orHVAC licenses as applicable.

    • Backflow Tester/Repair (preferred).

    • EPA 608 (for HVAC work), OSHA‑10/30, First Aid/CPR (preferred).

  • Technical Skills:Solder/braze, press, thread, solvent weld; pump alignment; gas sizing/leak checks; combustion analysis; hydronic balancing; controls basics.

  • Digital Skills:Proficient with mobile field apps/CMMS (e.g., ServiceTitan/ServiceTrade/FieldEdge), email, and photo documentation.

  • Soft Skills:Clear communication, customer service, time management, and coaching mindset.

Physical Requirements

  • Lift/push/pull up to 75 lbs; prolonged standing, bending, kneeling; work on ladders, roofs, mechanical rooms, crawlspaces, and trenches.

  • Work in varying temperatures and conditions; wear required PPE at all times.
