KEY REQUIREMENTS Must be a U.S. citizen. Must be able to obtain a Top Secret Clearance and be located in the continental United States, Hawaii, or San Juan for the duration of your background investigation. Must attend a U.S. accredited college or university full-time as an undergraduate, graduate, or post-doctoral student. You're not eligible if you will graduate before the program start date; exceptions are permitted if you're continuing your education in the semester immediately following. Must have and maintain a 3.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or better at the time of application, throughout the application process, and for the duration of the internship program. Must pass all FBI employment background investigation requirements. Selected interns are placed in assignments based on their location preferences, educational background, skillsets, and unique life experiences. In the application, you must identify up to 3 locations as your preferred work location. Note: Relocation and housing costs are not provided. If you receive an offer for your preferred work location but are no longer available to work at that location, the offer may be rescinded before the start of the program. BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION Prior to submitting to a background investigation, you must: Complete the SF-86: Questionnaire for National Security Positions. Meet with a special agent for an interview. Pass a polygraph examination based on your SF-86 responses. If you fail the polygraph because you withheld information about illegal drug use, criminal activity, or any other violation, you will be automatically disqualified from this and ALL employment with the FBI. Also, failing the polygraph or background investigation will likely negatively affect future employment opportunities with the U.S. intelligence community and any other federal agency. Pass a urinalysis drug test. Once these steps are successfully completed, you will be subjected to a comprehensive background investigation, including a credit and criminal history check, as well as interviews with: Prior employers Coworkers Personal associates Family members Friends Chosen references You may be disqualified from selection or removed from employment depending on the information obtained during this background investigation. You must pass the background investigation and be cleared for hire to begin the internship; the investigation can take six to eight months to process, which varies depending on the candidate's background, the number of places lived, overseas travel, and more. The FBI cannot guarantee that a selected candidate's background investigation will be completed in time to begin the internship. AUTOMATIC DISQUALIFIERS You will be automatically eliminated from the application process if you meet any of the following disqualifiers: Not a U.S. citizen (born or naturalized). Have been convicted of a felony. Have used illegal drugs in violation of the FBI Employment Drug Policy. Have defaulted on a student loan insured by the U.S. government. Have failed an FBI-administered urinalysis drug test. Have failed to register with the Selective Service System (males only; exceptions apply). Please note: If you fail to meet all the key requirements or meet any of the automatic disqualifiers, then you are NOT eligible for the Honors Internship Program and/or employment with the FBI. If you're selected for the program, you'll have to go to the FBI Field Office closest to your address for the interview, polygraph, and drug test. To determine which Field Office to visit, you must list the address where you'll be for the majority of your time from Jul. 27 to Oct. 2, 2026. Most likely, that will be your school address. Be sure to enter the correct address so that you're assigned to the appropriate Field Office.
