Staff Accountant

The Staff Accountant is responsible for performing a variety of accounting tasks, including general ledger maintenance, preparing financial reports, assisting with month-end closing, and ensuring compliance with accounting standards. The role supports the accounting team in the preparation of accurate and timely financial statements and reports.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. General Ledger and Journal Entries
    • Prepare, record, and post journal entries to the general ledger.
    • Assist in maintaining the general ledger, including balancing accounts and resolving discrepancies.
  2. Account Reconciliations
    • Perform monthly reconciliations of accounts, including cash, bank, accounts payable, and accounts receivable.
    • Investigate and resolve any discrepancies found during reconciliations.
  3. Month-End and Year-End Closing
    • Assist in month-end closing activities, including posting journal entries, reconciling accounts, and preparing financial reports.
    • Support year-end close activities and assist with the preparation of financial statements.
  4. Financial Reporting
    • Assist in the preparation of financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow reports.
    • Help prepare ad-hoc reports as needed by senior accounting staff or management.
  5. Compliance and Internal Controls
    • Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
    • Assist with external audits and reviews, providing necessary documentation and support.
  6. Tax Reporting
    • Assist in preparing and filing state and federal tax returns (e.g., sales tax, property tax, etc.).
    • Ensure accurate tax filings and compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  7. Other Duties
    • Participate in process improvements within the accounting department.
    • Perform other accounting-related tasks assigned by the Accounting Manager or senior staff.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of accounting principles (GAAP or other applicable standards)
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Microsoft Dynamics, or similar)
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, v-lookup, etc.)
  • Problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (required)
  • 1-3 years of accounting or finance experience (preferred)
  • Prior experience with accounting software (required)
  • Knowledge of payroll processing, tax compliance, and financial reporting (preferred)

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

  • Standard office environment
  • Occasional extra hours, especially around month-end, year-end, or audits
  • Limited travel may be required for training or business needs
