Director Of Engineering (Facilities)

The Director of Engineering (Facilities) leads all aspects of building operations, maintenance, and engineering services to ensure a safe and efficient healthcare environment. This role oversees preventive maintenance, utility systems, and facility improvements while managing budgets and supporting construction projects. Works closely with leadership teams to maintain compliance and operational excellence.

Assumes overall responsibility for the administrative supervision of the Facilities and Engineering functions. Oversees the operation, maintenance, and repair of all buildings, equipment, and grounds to ensure a safe, efficient, and compliant environment. Directs preventive maintenance programs, energy management, and utility systems. Provides leadership for construction and renovation projects, ensuring alignment with organizational standards and budgetary guidelines. Works collaboratively with finance and other departments to manage capital planning and operational budgets. Ensures compliance with applicable codes, standards, and organizational policies.

Education

  • Required: Bachelor's degree in Construction, Engineering, Architecture, or a related field.
  • Preferred: Master's degree in a related discipline.

Licensure

  • Required: None.
  • Preferred: Registered Professional Engineer.

Experience

  • Required: Minimum of five years in management roles overseeing facilities or engineering operations.
  • Preferred: Experience as a Director of Facilities or Engineering in a hospital or healthcare setting of similar size.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of building codes, Life Safety Code, and federal and state regulations.
  • Familiarity with Joint Commission standards and AIA procedures.
  • Proficient in CAD and construction-related software applications.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Moderate walking, stooping, bending, and climbing are required for inspections.
  • Visual acuity and manual dexterity for working with tools, schematics, and blueprints.

Protective Equipment

  • May require ear protection, gloves, safety glasses, and hard hat during inspections.

Working Conditions

  • Exposure to loud noise and extreme temperatures is possible during site visits.

Training

  • Completion of hospital and department orientation.
  • On-the-job training under the Vice President of Administrative Services or designee.
  • Active participation in continuing education.
