Description:

Fisheries Biologist

CSS, Inc. is looking for a qualified candidate to support the Fisheries Statistics Division (FSD) of NOAA's Southeast Fisheries Science Center (SEFSC). This individual will support biological sampling, laboratory tasks, data management, and analysis for the FSC.

This position is offsite and can be located at any coastal location in the Southeastern US from NC to TX.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the NOAA Fisheries field representative with head boat owners/operators and anglers
  • Identify and enumerate individual fish to the species level from landed catches; collect data and samples from individual fish in accordance with sampling protocols and goals.
  • Perform daily data entry, validation, and QA/QC.
  • Process biological samples in the laboratory.
  • Review daily trip reports for errors and inconsistencies
  • Conduct regular checks and maintenance on government equipment used.
  • Participate in various surveys and related research projects in the field and laboratory
  • Participate in public outreach efforts and events
  • Attend, participate, or present in scientific workshops or meetings

Required Qualifications

  • BS Degree in Marine Science or a related field plus 3 additional years of relevant experience
  • Expert knowledge of U.S. Southeast Atlantic marine fish identification
  • Proficient in the concepts, principles and methodologies of data management and statistical analysis of fishery data
  • Knowledge of data entry applications and database software including Microsoft Excel, Oracle and Access
  • Initial physical exam and/or periodic medical monitoring, including drug screening, may be required for sea-going roles.
  • Ability to lift/carry at least 40lbs and work outdoors for extended periods.
  • Ability to pass a National Agency Check (NACI) and maintain it throughout the duration of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficient in the use of fish, invertebrate, and protected species identification books and keys
  • Experience with common word processing, database, statistical, and graphics software
  • Experience collecting catch and effort information from recreational fishermen.
  • Knowledge of collection of routine biological samples (lengths, age structures, gonads, etc.) from marine fish.
