Description:

Technical Writer 2

Location: Remote: must be local to southern California and willing to pick up equipment from Tech Bar

Duration: 18 Months (Possibility of extension)

Responsibilities:

  • Design, draft, and maintain the following documentation:
  • Process Maps
  • Business Process Procedures
  • Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Job Aids
  • Performance Support Notebooks
  • Manual updates (e.g., Rubber Glove, Grounding, Rigging, Transmission Grounding Manuals)
  • Videos

Ensure all documentation is:

  • Field/business-ready, practical, and accessible for personnel
  • Consistent with current standards, policies, and safety requirements Structured according to approved WMI governance and SOP procedures

Schedule and facilitate working sessions with:

  • Subject Matter Experts (SMEs)
  • Reviewers
  • Advisors
  • Gather technical input, operational insights, and field practices, capturing consensus and translating decisions into clear documentation.

Conduct research and analysis to:

  • Locate and integrate policy, materials, presentations, vendor information, and SME input into standardized work method documentation templates
  • Validate the accuracy and completeness of deliverables before seeking approval

Collaborate closely with:

  • WMI JEM Advisors and Project Leads
  • Stakeholders and SMEs
  • Continuous Improvement Project Managers
  • Provide status updates and support project timelines. Uphold governance, review, and approval workflows as outlined in WMI procedures.
  • Perform on-site visits and job walks as necessary to understand actual work practices.
  • Conduct basic image editing to enhance documentation and coordinate with media vendors to script and develop media content.

Maintain existing documentation in response to:

  • New or updated processes/procedures
  • Changes in standards Pilot projects
  • Corrective actions Safety workstreams (including new tools, equipment, or work method processes)

Required Skills/Attributes:

  • Proven experience producing technical, procedural and or process documentation.
  • Ability to translate complex technical input into plain, field usable language.
  • Strong facilitation skills for SME working sessions.
  • Experience working in: Utilities, energy, construction, manufacturing, or industrial environments (strongly preferred).
  • Strong organizational, writing, and version control discipline.
  • Comfort working collaboratively across organizational units.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Photo Editing Software, SharePoint, OneDrive, Acrobat, Outlook, TEAMs, Visio, and Co-Pilot.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, or other technical discipline or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Experience:

  • 5–8+ years of technical writing experience or 3–5+ years of technical writing experience plus strong utility / industrial / field operations exposure.
