The State Historical Society is a Division with the Department of Education. The Society empowers audiences to experience South Dakota's stories. We professionally collect, preserve, interpret, and publish our history for present and future generations. We are proudly supported by the South Dakota Historical Society Foundation and are an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution.
This position is Assistant to the State Historian & Director . The position assists the Director of the Society in his daily duties leading the Historical Society. The person must have ability to write and speak well, affably communicate to the public in one-to-one situations, be personable and represent the Society well. The person assists in organizing, designing, and editing newsletters; assisting the State Historian with research and presentations; and is the assistant to the Society's Board of Trustees and to the America 250 SD Commission. These duties include preparing the board materials for each meeting, assisting during each meeting, and other things to organize and prepare the State Historian, Staff, and Trustees/Commissions for these public meetings. The position will manage the Historical Society's fiscal transactions and travel, invoice processing, purchasing, and other limited financial duties as necessary.
The Society has recently finished a major renovation of its building, re-opened the Archives in July of 2025 and partially reopened the state museum in July of 2026. These new renovations and the expected completion of the museum in 2027 make it an exciting time to join the Society.
